Four text-channel patterns
Romance bait
A warm text from someone you never matched — a compliment, a “you look like someone I know,” a photo that may be stolen or generated. The goal is a private thread they control. Days later comes the crisis, the ticket, or the trading screenshot. If you have not done unscripted live video on a platform that can ban them, treat money talk as the end. Wrong-number opener
They “meant” someone else. They apologize. They ask what you do. The politeness is the product. A real misdial ends. A sourcing text continues, then asks for WhatsApp, a photo, or a call. You do not owe a stranger a biography because they claimed a typo. Do not send nudes to “prove” you are real — that can become sextortion.
Package / delivery pretext
A carrier, “USPS,” Amazon, or “your porch package” link. Sometimes it arrives after a dating chat (“I sent you something”). The site wants a card, a login, or a one-time code. Open the store or carrier app you already have — do not use the link in the text. A match who needs you to “pay the customs fee” on a gift is running a money ask, not shipping. Investment pitch via SMS
Friendly check-ins, then a screenshot of a dashboard, a “mentor,” or a coin that “already 3x’d.” A small withdrawal that arrives is the hook. Unlock fees and taxes to release a frozen balance are the second steal. If a person you have not met starts talking wallets, stop. You do not owe them a debate about charts. Replying to a random long-code romance or delivery text confirms the number is live. Do not argue. Do not joke. Screenshot, forward, block.
Evidence to keep
Delete later if you want. Save first. Threads vanish when they block you, and “I never texted you” is easier if you have nothing.
- Full-thread screenshots — include the number or short code at the top, timestamps, and any link (copy the URL into a note; do not tap it again).
- The dating profile if this started as a match — username, photos, bio — before you report.
- Payment crumbs — gift-card receipts, wallet addresses, Cash App / Zelle names, fake “broker” URLs.
- Short code vs long number — a five- or six-digit code can still be abused; a regular mobile is easier to rotate. Note both.

Stay on the app
