They are patient. They remember your dog’s name. Weeks in, they mention a trading platform that “a friend” uses. That is the con — not a bad date.

The name is ugly on purpose. Operators “fatten” a victim with attention, then slaughter the account. Australian police warned thousands of people in early 2026 about romance scams tied to fake cryptocurrency. US and UK agencies have been describing the same funnel for years: dating app or social app → private chat → investment site that looks like Coinbase’s cousin.
The usual arc
- Polished photos, often AI or stolen. Job story that explains travel or odd hours (oil, military, trading, “between countries”).
- Fast emotional intimacy. Not always “I love you” on day two — some crews play it slower now because everyone has read that tell.
- Move to WhatsApp, Telegram, or iMessage. “The app keeps logging me out.”
- Screenshots of a trading dashboard. A small “test” withdrawal that actually arrives, which is the hook.
- Larger deposits. Then a tax, unlock fee, or frozen account. Then silence.
If they mention returns, wallets, or a platform you did not type into your browser yourself, stop.
You do not owe them a debate about charts. Real partners do not onboard you to a brokerage from a dating chat.
How this differs from a regular catfish
A catfish wants a relationship under a fake face, or nudes, or a small cash ask for a bus ticket. Pig butchering wants a five- or six-figure transfer into a site they control. The romance is inventory. That is why they can afford to be kind for a month.
If money already left
- Do not pay an unlock fee. That is the second steal.
- Call your bank or card issuer the same day. Crypto on-ramps are harder; still report the on-ramp (Coinbase, bank wire, gift cards) immediately.
