Romance scams still start on dating apps and social apps. The script has gotten smoother — better grammar, AI faces, slower “I love you” — but the money ask has not changed. Chat and contact flags
- Rush to WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, or iMessage — “the app is glitchy,” “I get logged out,” or “I prefer private.” Dating apps keep a report trail. Private apps do not. Stay on-platform until you have done live video.
- They refuse to stay on the app after you say no — polite pushback is data. Persistent push is the script.
- New number or handle every few days — burned accounts get replaced. Ask why the old one vanished.
- They message from multiple apps at once — dating app plus Instagram plus WhatsApp, all before you have met. Volume is not intimacy.
- Odd hours that always match “oil rig / military / overseas trading” — the job story explains why they never meet and why money is urgent later.
Money and payment flags
- Any ask for cash, gift cards, or prepaid cards — travel, hospital, visa, customs, “prove you care.” Gift cards are irreversible; that is why scammers like them.
- Crypto wallet, seed phrase, or “just buy a little Bitcoin first” — not a relationship. Not a test. Stop.
- Investment platform, trading screenshot, or “my friend runs a private fund” — that is pig butchering, not a hot tip.
- A small withdrawal that “works” — the hook. Larger deposits come next; then a tax, unlock fee, or frozen account.
- Unlock fee, tax, or “release the funds” — the second steal. Do not pay it.
- Wire, Zelle, Cash App, Western Union to a stranger — treat as gone once sent. Call the bank the same day anyway.
- Link to “verify” on another site or a fake exclusive app — card-skimming pages dressed as romance.
Identity and video flags
- Refuse live video, or “camera is broken” for a week — a gym clip or TikTok is not a call.
- Live video that feels scripted or delayed — deepfake pipelines exist. Ask for something spontaneous: wave a hand, turn 90°, hold up three fingers, say a word you invent.

- Too-perfect modeling photos, no candid shots — not proof alone, but stack it with other flags.
- They will only voice-call, never show a face — voice can be cloned or borrowed. Face live, on the dating app, is the bar.
Story and pressure flags
- Love bombing inside a week — soulmate language before shared reality. Still a script when the grammar is perfect.
- Crisis that only money solves — medical emergency, stranded abroad, customs hold, child’s tuition. Urgency is the product.
- Story details that slip — city names, ages, kids, ship names. Write them down once; ask again later.
- Isolation ask — “don’t tell your friends, they won’t understand us.” Shame and secrecy protect the con.
- Guilt when you hesitate — “I thought you were different,” “after all we’ve shared.” You are allowed to slow down.
- They never can meet in person, for months — distance happens; permanent impossibility plus money ask is the pattern.
You do not owe them a debate.

Stop sending
Primary rule. No gift card “one last time.” No unlock fee. Money already gone is painful; more money does not buy it back.
Save evidence, then report
